Who is the Buzz is a question that most ask and few can answer. Sometime singer, sometime guitar player, sometime harmonica player and full time rocker, the Buzz is one of the original members of KL superband, Benchmarx.
The Buzz's earliest introduction to music was via his father's eclectic yet honourable record collection where dirty comedians and white bearded country crooners were high in rotation. It was the melodies of Petula Clark and Rod Stewart's later years that spoke loudly to the Buzz. For he immediately knew the kind of music he did not want to make.
At the age of 6, the Buzz's first misinterpreted signs of music prodigy were discovered as he started his first band, The La-La's. The La-La's didn't last. Both the Buzz and musical partner, Debbie T, were weary of allowing their parents to control their musical careers and decided that taking their Beach Boy Lip Sync act public would have to wait.
While both acoustic and electric guitars gathered dust over the years, the Buzz opted to study the great lyricists of his generation: Run DMC, Slick Rick, Public Enemy, The Beatles and regrettably DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince (He also regrets buying Rob Base's solo album) as he valued the art of word play and rhyme. The Buzz picked up a guitar again while in University as a way to pass the time til the real world came knocking.
Surrounding himself with Investment Bankers and Civil Servants, the Buzz quickly discovered that going solo would be his only choice if a life in music was to be had. He started with a short, albeit radically successful career in standup comedy that saw him perform his rare breed of musical comedy in Canada, Vietnam, Singapore, Beijing and Malaysia under the moniker of Jim's Only Son. He recorded one currently-out-of-print CD that still makes his parents cringe.
It was in Singapore that the Buzz finally found a group of characters that he would form a band with. Tailor Made Suits was a collection of like-minded acoustic wonders who played a variety of shows in Singapore delivering easy listening hits to people that chose to ignore them. Buzz enjoyed the limelight but the fame quickly became too much and the Buzz left Singapore for the sunny, dusty, Islamic, rock-ready peninsula of Malaysia.
It was in the garden city, Kuala Lumpur, that the Buzz met up with his creative equal and emotional rock, the T.I.C.K. Word spread and in a matter of days, the original line-up of the Benchmarx began to evolve in a small, dank, smoke filled, vomit emporium of a rehearsal studio. A new chapter in rock and roll history had begun and the Buzz vows to continue making spelling errors through the rest of the story.
